2024 Ramadan in Dubai

In 2024, the Ramadan period in Dubai is from March 11th to April 10th. Ramadan is a time of spiritual reflection, self-improvement, and observance for Muslims worldwide. Participants fast from dawn till dusk. In Dubai, businesses, museums, and other establishments often adjust their operating hours during Ramadan. Dubai's residents and visitors engage in a range of exciting Ramadan activities throughout the day, including enjoying delicious pre-dawn Suhoor meals and breaking fast with Iftar feasts. There are late-night activities to explore, and various products inspired by Ramadan are available for purchase at locations across the city. Dubai's city center hosts numerous Ramadan night markets and retail outlets. During Ramadan, you have an incredible opportunity to experience Dubai's vibrant culture, explore its unique characteristics, and take full advantage of shopping discounts.

When traveling to Dubai, there are certain things you should be mindful of to ensure a smooth and respectful visit.

Here are some important considerations and taboos to avoid:

  1. Dubai is an Islamic country, and visitors are expected to adhere to local religious and cultural customs. For example, wearing revealing clothing is not allowed in mosques, public places, and commercial buildings. It's also essential to avoid consuming alcohol and pork in public areas, except in designated restaurants and hotels.
  1. Dubai is a highly diverse and liberal city, but it's crucial to understand and respect local culture and customs before arriving to avoid violating local laws and ethical norms.
  2. 3. During the annual Ramadan period, it's essential for women to wear long-sleeved clothing and long pants while avoiding overly revealing attire. Additionally, it's necessary to refrain from drinking water, smoking, or eating in public places during daylight hours.
  3. Many Arab households continue to have floor-seating arrangements for meals and use their hands to eat. If you are invited to dine with a local family, it's essential to respect and follow their customs.
  4. During Ramadan, most restaurants and beverage establishments, except for hotels, suspend their operations from sunrise to sunset.
  5. Taking photographs of local people, especially women, without permission is not allowed. Taking photos with them without consent is also discouraged. If a tourist attraction specifies a 'no photo or video' rule, it's essential to adhere to it.
  6. It is prohibited to make loud noises, use disrespectful language, or engage in any behavior that harasses others in public places.

What to wear in Dubai or Abu Dhabi?

  1. In summer, it's best to wear short-sleeved or lightweight long-sleeved tops. During winter, long-sleeved clothing and the option of adding a jacket in the mornings and evenings are recommended. Arab regions generally have abundant sunshine, so remember to bring sun-protective products and clothing. Occasionally, there might be rain and dust storms, so it's advisable to carry an umbrella and a face mask with you.
  2. Please wear formal attire When attending formal occasions such as high-end hotels and restaurants. Avoid wearing slippers or clothing that is too revealing.
Women:
  1. Wearing backless, midriff-baring, knee-revealing, tight, or see-through clothing is prohibited.
  2. Walking on the streets or in public areas in swimwear is not allowed.
  3. If you wear a skirt during Ramadan, the hemline must extend beyond the knee.
Men:
  1. Wearing shorts or going bare-chested in public places is prohibited.
  2. Wearing women's fashion jewelry is not allowed.
  3. Walking on the streets or in public areas in swim trunks is prohibited.

What are the precautions and taboos when visiting a mosque? What should not be touched or approached?

  1. Dress Code: Women should be fully covered, wearing a long robe or loose long skirt and a headscarf. Men should wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts. Some mosques may provide free robes for visitors, so it's advisable to check if the mosque you plan to visit offers them.

In conclusion, when visiting a mosque, it's essential to adhere to the mosque's etiquette and taboos, demonstrating respect and understanding for the local culture and faith.

What are the precautions when visiting a mosque, and what taboos should not be broken?

  1. Attire: Women should be fully covered, wearing a long robe or loose long skirt and a headscarf. Men should wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts. Some mosques that are open for visitors may provide complimentary robes, but you should confirm if the mosque you plan to visit offers them.
